(SPRINGVILLE) - A Mitchell woman was arrested after she led Lawrence County police on a short pursuit Monday night.
Police arrested 21-year-old Dashia Deel, a passenger in the vehicle, and are still looking for the driver.
The pursuit began at 10:49 p.m. on State Road 58. A county officer was on patrol in the area when they noticed the vehicle Deel was in cross the centerline twice.
According to Sheriff Mike Branham, the officer tried to pull over the vehicle, but the man stopped the vehicle in the middle of the highway instead of to the side.
As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped off, so the officer got back in his patrol car and initiated a pursuit.
The driver turned onto Armstrong Station Road, then onto Boone Hollow Road where he crashed in a curve.
Sheriff Branham says Deel was "obviously impaired" and remained at the scene, while the driver fled on foot. Police were unable to locate him.
Deel complained of pain to her shoulder and head is also didn't know what was going on and couldn't tell police who the driver was. She was taken to Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital to be treated.
Police then inventoried the vehicle and found a container on the floor of the vehicle that contained two bags. One had a white powder substance that field-tested positive for cocaine, the other bag had a brown powder substance in it that field-tested positive as heroin.
Once Deel was released from the hospital, she was taken to the Lawrence County jail on charges of possession of cocaine and possession of Schedule I controlled substance (heroin).
She remained in jail this morning with a bond set at $7,500 surety or $755 cash.
Pending charges for the man who fled, who was later identified by Deel, include the same drug charges plus maintaining a common nuisance, resisting arrest by motor vehicle, resisting arrest by fleeing and driving with a suspended license (infraction). Police are withholding his name until his arrest.
