(BLOOMFIELD) - Thanks to a Bloomfield business, the Bloomfield Police Department will have body cameras after the first of the year.
Bloomfield Town Marshal Kenny Tharp says Mectra Labs of Bloomfield made a donation which will purchase body cameras and the needed accessories.
Mectra Labs CEO Thomas Clement paid for body cameras for all four full-time officers and the storage space to hold the videos.
Marshal Tharp told the Greene County Daily World he almost fainted when he received the generous donation.
Mectra Labs has been successful, which prompted Clement to make a donation. The medical device manufacturer, who owns 32 medical patents, has worked with the Bloomfield Police Department in the past .
Clement says he wanted to give back to the department who keeps on giving.
The Taser body cameras will allow officers to back up their reports with audio and video recording. At the end of the shift, the officers will set their body cameras on the dock, which will then automatically upload the data to a protected server, which cannot be manipulated in any way. The footage can also be used in court when pursuing criminal charges. The body cameras will also help ensure officers remain accountable for their actions.
Marshal Tharp says the cameras should arrive at the first of the year. Once officers are trained and policies are in place the officers will begin using the cameras.
