(BEDFORD) - The Hoosier National Forest announced that major reconstruction and redesign work has been completed on the D Trail, located near Story, Indiana.
The trail is now multiple use, open to mountain bikes as well as horseback riders and hikers.
A total of five segments, equaling approximately one mile, were rerouted and redesigned to allow mountain biking along the length of the trail. The 2.2 mile Forest Service trail now connects to Indiana State Forest and Sate Park property, changing ownership three times, and connecting visitors from one public land ownership to the next. The entire stretch is now in a sustainable location with spectacular views of Indiana's hardwood forests, creating a trail user's delight.
The new D-Trail will tie trails on Brown County State Park and Yellowwood State Forest to the Hoosier; where with a short segment on a county road, users can then ride or hike the Nebo Trail Ridge Trail. The Nebo Ridge Trail may be the most popular mountain bike trail on the Forest so mountain bikers are already using the trail and are delighted to have a longer riding experience available.
Working together, Hoosier NF employees and the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) members determined the new trail route. The Hoosier NF utilized the mule team to plow and grade the route, and volunteers from the HMBA worked with Hoosier NF personnel to finish trail building work.
Collaboration made this project possible, and cooperation is necessary to keep this trail a great visitor experience. Remember to the share the trail: hikers yield to horses; cyclists yield to hikers and horses. All horse and bicycle users on the National Forest, 17 years of age or older, are required to have a trail permit tag. Trail tags are available at the Forest offices and several local vendors.
