(BLOOMINGTON) - A Spencer man was arrested Friday night after he was involved in a rear-collision in a stolen car and then fled the scene.
Bloomington Police arrested 48-year-old James Casteel Jr. on felony charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor charges of resisting law arrest and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with endangerment. His bond has been set at $4,000 surety, $500 cash..
According to a Bloomington Police report, officers were called to investigate a rear-end collision at the intersection of Second Street and College Mall Road at 7:23 p.m. The caller reported their vehicle had been stolen on Nov. 30 and that stolen vehicle was involved in this collision. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.
An ambulance crew later called police reporting the same vehicle had two flat tires and was traveling westbound on Cory Lane.
Police attempted to stop the driver, but they fled down West Third Street and along other streets onto Kirkwood Avenue. That is where the driver rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection of Second and South Rogers streets stopping the vehicle.
Officers ordered the driver out of the vehicle, but he would not comply. The man finally exited, but would not comply with police commands. An officer then fired a sponge rounds, which struck the man in the front hip and the left buttock. The man still wouldn't comply so police sent a K-9 in which held the man down until police could get him in handcuffs.
During a pat down police found Casteel had a knife in his possession.
