(BEDFORD) - The 43nd Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee begins Monday, February 6 at the Shafer Auditorium in Bedford.
1340 AM WBIW is hosting the event.
Representatives from 16 schools are competing for the title and the public is invited to the free event to support their favorite contestant.
Elementary champions, grades 4-5, will begin competing Monday, February 6, in hopes to win the title and an opportunity to take on the middle school champions, grades 6-8 on Tuesday, February 7.
Competition begins at 4:30 p.m. both days at Schafer Auditorium and is free to attend to the public.
WBIW offers options for you to view or listen to the Spelling Bee should you not be able to attend. You will be able to view the bee on Facebook Live at 4:30 p.m. You may also listen to the stream online at WBIW.com on 1340 AM WBIW both days at 6:30 p.m.
"The additional options of streaming or facebook live allows those friends and family members that can not attend due to working or living out of town to be able to listen or see their loved ones compete," says President Holly Davis.
All participants will receive a 1340 AM WBIW Spelling Bee t-shirt and a certificate. The top three will also receive a bee bobble-head trophy. The overall Spelling Bee champion will receive a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank.
The Champion will then advance to the 2017 Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on March 11 at the Bomhard Theater, Kentucky Center for the Arts.
The Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee showcases Kentucky and Southern Indiana's top spellers in a suspenseful competition that leaves only one standing. The top five finishers receive savings bonds from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, while the overall champion gets to ride on the Winner's Float in the Republic Bank Pegasus® Parade.
