(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell man was arrested Thursday on a charge of domestic battery after he allegedly injured his pregnant girlfriend.
According to a Lawrence County probable cause affidavit, Mitchell police were called to a home in the 300 block of North Sixth Street after a report of a domestic dispute.
Police talked to 23-year-old Dustin Perry who was standing outside of the home when police arrived on the scene.
Petty told police that his girlfriend had his truck keys and would not give them to him.
Petty was wearing a belt that was holding a handgun, handcuffs and a spare magazine for that handgun.
He told police he worked for the Harrison County Sheriff's Department.
Officers then talked to Petty's girlfriend, who was pregnant. She told them Petty had pushed her against a wall because he thought she had his truck keys. The woman told police she didn't have the keys. She told police Petty had grabbed her arm and pushed her a second time against a bedroom wall hitting her head and then started to choke her. A 1-year-old child witnessed the incident.
The woman was able to escape the home and call a friend, who then alerted police. The friend could hear Petty screaming at the woman during the phone call.
The woman told police this was not the first time Petty had injured her. She told police he had slapped her in the face and pulled her arms in the past.
He is being held in the Lawrence County Jail on a $20,000 surety or $2,005 cash bond.
