(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County Council approved a two-year contractual agreement between the sheriff’s office’s collective bargaining unit and the county, and amended the 2017 salary ordinance to reflect a pay increase for 32 deputies.
The pay increase came after a study by Waggoner, Irwin & Scheele compared Monroe County sheriff's deputies' salaries and other compensation packages with those of peer counties. According to that study, deputies' salaries were below the average of other comparable entities.
Sheriff Brad Swain says the minimum salary for an incoming sheriff's deputy will increase from $39,382 to $43,489 with pay increases at one, three, eight and 14 years of service.
Salaries for sergeants will increase from $42,253 to $51,771.97, and salaries for lieutenants will increase from $47,913 to $53,195.
The council also approved increasing the salary for one deputy who will now serve on the K-9 Unit. That deputy's salary was increased because of the additional duties associated with running a unit that includes canines.
The council chose to use some of the adopted public safety local income tax as a source of revenue to meet this obligation.
