Olivia Jordan Claims Elementary Title At 43rd Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee

(BEDFORD) - Olivia Jordan, a fifth grader at Springville Elementary School was named the Elementary Champion during the 43rd Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee at Shafer Auditorium Monday night. She beat out 10 other competitors.

Placing second was Brendan Brown, a fifth grader, at Parkview Intermediate and taking third was Quentin Voigtschild, a fifth grade home schooled student.

Olivia claimed the title after spelling machete correctly.

A spell-off determined the second and third place finishers.

The round began with Brayden Baker, Brendan Laughlin, Quentin Voightschild and Braden Brown.

Brayden Baker and Brenden Laughlin were eliminated during that round leaving Quentin and Braden to battle for second and third place.

This battle continued for 8 more rounds when Quentin misspelled the word curtain.

The competition continues tonight when Olivia will taken on the Middle School champions.

WBIW 1340 AM has proudly been the Lawrence County Spelling Bee Coordinator and Host for forty three years.

Competition begins at 4:30 p.m. and is free to attend. If you can't attend, the event will be broadcast on 1340 AM WBIW at 6:30 p.m. and streamed online at WBIW.com

The overall Spelling Bee champion will receive a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank and a pizza party, provided by Pizza Hut for their homeroom class. The Champion will then advance to the 2017 Derby Festival Spelling Bee at the Kentucky Center for The Arts.
