(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after police say he injured his wife and failed to care for two puppies.
Lawrence County Police arrested 34-year-old Edward Parker Jr. of Bedford Tuesday morning on two warrants for petition to modify house arrest, failure to appear, two domestic battery warrants, criminal confinement, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance and animal cruelty.
According to Lawrence Superior Court I records, on October 1, The Lawrence County Police Department went to a home in the 1400 block of Trogden Lane after a report of a domestic fight.
A witness told police that as they were walking by the home he saw a woman, later identified as Parker's wife, trying to jump out of a window. He told police he saw a man, later identified as Parker, grabb her leg and try to pull her back inside, but the woman was able to break free and jump.
After she jumped, the witness stated Parker jumped out of the window and landed on the woman. The witness told police that the woman got free and ran behind him to avoid Parker, while Parker attempted to throw punches at her.
The woman started to run toward a church, but Parker grabbed her and dragged her back into the home.
When police arrived they knocked on the door, but no one answered. Concerned for the woman's safety, they forced open the door. They didn't find Parker or his wife, but they found two children sleeping. They also found marijuana and a pipe used to smoke the drug.
During their search, the woman walked to the back of the home from outside and accused Parker of locking her inside the home, and she fled by attempting to jump from her children's bedroom window.
In the following December when County Animal Control Officer Lola Nicholson went to Parker's home after a complaint of two puppies were without shelter. Police had been to the home numerous times for animal complaints.
When she arrived, she saw two red, mixed-breed puppies chained up in the side yard in 23-degree weather. She says one puppy had a small house and the other had a small crate, but neither could reach shelter due to their tangled chains. Both puppies were shaking uncontrollably and lying on a discarded piece of plastic in the yard.
Neither had food and their water was frozen. Both dogs were thin, with their ribs and backbones prominently showing.
The dogs were taken to the White River Humane Society.
No one answered when Nicholson knocked on the door, but she said two vehicles were in the driveway and she could hear a TV inside.
