(HELTONVILLE) - A Columbus man died Tuesday night after he drove his truck off Ind. 446, crossed a field and crashed into two trees.
Lawrence County Police were alerted to the crash at 6:36 p.m. at Ind. 446, near Mundell Church Road.
According to police, 70-year-old David Duncan of Columbus was traveling north on Ind. 446 and had just passed Mundell Church Road when for an unknown reason he drove his 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 off the right side of the road, down an embankment, through a grass field and hit two trees.
The truck hit the first tree with the left front side of the vehicle and then the second with the right rear of the vehicle.
Duncan was unconscious inside the truck when police arrived. He was removed from the vehicle by fire personnel from Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department and the Bedford Fire Department extrication unit. They say Duncan was not breathing and began CPR.
They also used a defibrillator to attempt to revive Duncan and continued CPR. When an ambulance crew from IU Health arrived they also tried to revive Duncan with a defibrillator and continued CPR. Duncan was then transported to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say it is unknown why Duncan drove off the roadway. There were no skid or brake marks left on or leading off the roadway.
