(UNDATED) - February 11 is officially “2-1-1 Day” in recognition of the free and confidential, service that connects residents to essential health and human services.
United Way 2-1-1 South Central Indiana services Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Lawrence, Orange, Scott and Washington Counties.
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the 2-1-1 center is staffed by specialists to assist you with finding the resources to meet the needs of clients for things such as food, clothing, shelter, rent and utility assistance, and much more.
In 2016, our local 2-1-1 Center answered over 15,000 contacts. Folks in need dialed 2-1-1, text their zip code to 898-211, instant messaged on our Facebook page, as well as sent e-mails and searched for resources from our website www.referweb.net/uwbc.
Without 2-1-1, people in need would make an average of eight (8) phone calls to different numbers before finding the services they need. 2-1-1 cuts through the red tape to save providers time and money, while helping residents connect with the resources they're looking for.
When natural disasters hit, 2-1-1 services increase in affected areas to serve as a clearinghouse of information for affected residents. When people are in crisis, it is nearly impossible to remember the telephone numbers to seek help. Instead, simply contacting 2-1-1 can get survivors connected to partners who can provide help. This helps reduce non-emergency calls to 9-1-1.
In celebration, United Way 2-1-1 will be hosting an open house 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. Friday, February 10, at our office (1531 13th St., Columbus, IN). Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments, meet the staff and tour the Center after signing our confidentiality agreement.
