(BLOOMINGTON) - Site plans for Indiana University Health Bloomington gained the approval of the Indiana University Board of Trustees on Friday morning.
The site, located on the campus of Indiana University, will include a new hospital, outpatient care center, as well as an education component.
Paul Strohm, senior vice president and director of healthcare for the lead architect firm, HOK, unveiled the site plan for the campus that utilizes the beauty of an undisturbed natural topography, protecting its native prairies and Hoosier woodlands.
"We will leverage the beauty of the natural environment to create a distinctive and healing setting for the campus. Patients, families, physicians, educators, students and staff will benefit," Strohm says, noting that the rolling hills and wooded ridge will lend the campus to terracing grade changes with Indiana regional limestone as landscape elements.
Matt Bailey, president of the IU Health South Central Region, which includes IU Health Bloomington Hospital says the hospital is pleased to be working closely with the University and its experts.
"We want to bring a facility to the area that not only improves healthcare, but also complements the beautiful landscape of southern Indiana," Bailey says. "We see our vision coming to fruition."
The development will occupy approximately 40 acres and will include the 575,000 square-foot IU Health Bloomington hospital and ambulatory care building and the University's health sciences educational building.
While final renderings of buildings are still in development, Friday's presentation was intended to show trustees how the new hospital and complementary structures will be positioned on the grounds, ingress and egress, internal roadways, parking and some of the sustainability efforts, such as state-of-the-art hydrology system which will lend in the effort to earn LEED certification on the overall project.
