Distinguished Young Women participants come from all walks of life, but they have one common characteristic: the desire to succeed.
Twenty-two high school seniors participated in preliminary competition Thursday and Friday at Havens Auditorium at Indiana University Kokomo.
The young women were evaluated by a panel of five judges in the following categories: Scholastics (25%), Interview (25%), Talent (20%), Fitness (15%), and Self-Expression (15%).
The program awarded $27,500 in scholarships with the winner, Alyssa Hochstetler of Middlebury, receiving an $8,000 scholarship.
Alyssa Hochstetler plans to attend either Purdue University, University of Alabama and plans to major in marketing and studio art. She did a piano performance of Fantasy by William Joseph.
Hochstetler will advance to the national level at the 60th Distinguished Young Women National Finals in Mobile, Alabama on June 29, 30 and July 1, 2017, where she will join with 50 other representatives from across the country in competing for cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America.
Each young woman receives valuable life experience through participation in the program including relationship skills, self-confidence, and a sense of achievement. The goal of Distinguished Young Women is to ensure that everyone who participates in the program at any level has an enjoyable and memorable experience. More than providing scholarship dollars, the program inspires these high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments..
