(DAVIESS CO.) - A proposed hike of the local Innkeeper’s Tax from 5 to 7 percent would help fund an event center in Daviess County.
That's what County Visitor Bureau Executive Director Samantha Bobbitt told the Daviess County Council before they approved a request to recommend the tax be raised by the Indiana General Assembly.
The Washington Times Herald Herald quoted Bobbitt as saying they want to be pro-active and use the extra funds to promote the county's position on I-69 and showcase what Daviess County has by creating some kind of event, educational and cultural center.
Over the last four years the tax has generated $200,000 a year and increase would boost that another $80,000 a year.
The tax is paid mostly by out of county visitors to Daviess County who rent hotel rooms.
Bobbitt says the extra funds are a drop in the bucket when it comes to building a multi-million dollar facility akin to the West Gate Academy, but she says the extra dollars are a start.
