(BLOOMINGTON) - Two cats died in a fire at Canterbury House Apartments at 548 South Basswood Drive Saturday night.
Bloomington Fire Department responded to the fire on the west side at 8 p.m. after police received numerous calls about the fire.
Before firefighters arrived, a resident from a neighboring apartment used a fire extinguisher from his apartment to douse the flames through a broken window. After emptying that fire extinguisher he emptied a second one on the fire helping to contain the blaze.
When firefighters arrived they found smoke and flames coming out of one of the ground-floor apartments.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly and then ventilated the remaining apartment of smoke.
Bloomington Fire Sgt. Brandon Hudson says firefighters were able to rescue the cats and attempted to revive them but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Damage to the apartment is estimated at $25,000.
