(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham announced the School Safety Council of North Lawrence Community Schools will meet Friday.
The group will meet at 10 a.m. at the NLCS Administration building.
The School Safety Commission was started in 2013.
According to Sheriff Mike Branham, who is chairing Friday's meeting, participants include staff members from North Lawrence Community School, Mitchell Community Schools, St. Vincent de Paul, school board members, principals and staff members from the transportation departments, physical plant maintenance, the Sheriff's Department, Bedford Police Department, Indiana State Police, juvenile judge, juvenile probation, juvenile prosecutor, emergency management, Bedford Fire Department and the technology department.
Under Indiana Code the commission develops a safety plan for each school in the school corporation. coordinate the safety plans of each school as required under rules adopted by the Indiana state board of education and acts as a resource for other individuals in the school corporation on issues related to school discipline, safety, and security.
"Since it began, we have talked about everything from communications between the schools and law enforcement, to attending and conducting drills, recommending training, equipment, or policy changes and so on," says Sheriff Branham. "The agenda for the upcoming meeting will include discussion of recent school threat events and a debrief of those incidents. We will also be discussing any potential or needed changes to current practice to increase safety and security, as well as possible training opportunities."
The forum is similar to the Judicial Review Committee with a roundtable of multiple stakeholders holding open discussions.
