(BLOOMINGTON) - A transient told police he found the stolen items he was caught with while searching trash bins on the city’s north side on Wednesday.
Bloomington Police stopped 25-year-old Maliky Smith around 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of 17th and North Washington streets after receiving several complaints about a man entering vehicles and taking items.
Police found Smith with prescription pill bottles, a wallet with four credit cards with different names and two checkbooks, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
He was arrested on charges of unauthorized entry in a vehicle, theft, fraud, possession of a legend drug, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was also warrant out of Hamilton County for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Smith told police he found some of the items in a dumpster and he was given some of the items from friends. However, Smith couldn't tell police where the dumpster was located or who the friends were.
Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams says Smith could face additional charges if the owners of the stolen items file charges.
Smith is also a suspect in a check fraud case and matches the description of a suspect in a string of other car break-ins.
