(BEDFORD) - The Ugly Duck Derby Belly Buster Celebrities were named at the kick off event at Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ Tuesday night.
Those celebrities are:
The celebrity that gets the most likes on Facebook will automatically advance to the final round of the belly buster contest on May 20.
During the kick off event, attendees could purchase 40 racing ducks for $100. Anyone buying one of these bargain-priced double flocks was automatically entered into a drawing for a 7 night stay at The Villas Summer Bay in Orlando, Florida over the fall break. The winner was Dennis Gillespie of Bedford.
The kick off event raised $4,000, selling 1,600 ducks.
"These results are fantastic and we really appreciate everyone that attended the kick off," says Board Member Holly Davis. "This a great way to kick off this event, however, the club still faces the challenge of selling the remaining 8200 ducks. The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County is proud to offer the various programs for our community youth but we can't sustain the club without the efforts of donations and fundraisers such as the Ugly Duck Derby."
This year's theme is Cheeseburger in Paradise and features Larry Summerton and Henry Hill on the grill cooking burgers.
According to Davis, this year's fundraiser offers some great prizes including a two-year lease of a 2017 Ford Focus from Bedford Ford. The last duck to cross the finish line this year claims a whole hog courtesy of Bill and Kristi Spreen.
Ducks are $5 each or five for $20. A flock of 13 is available for $50. There are 10,000 ducks available for the adoption. As in years past, there will be second 100 duck race with ducks adopted for $100 each. The first finishing duck of this race will win their choice of a 2017 ATV or $2,500.
New this year will be a third race of only 15 ducks. These ducks will be auctioned off at a silent auction at the Ugly Duck Derby on May 20. The grand prize of that race will be a 4 night stay at The Amazing Memory Lodge in Sevierville, Tennessee.
The club also is introducing a new team duck relay event. Local businesses can adopt teams of four larger ducks to compete in the relay.
All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lawrence County.
