(BEDFORD) -The Bedford Hiking Club will host a volkswalk on April 22.
The walk will be along the Milwaukee Trail and streets of Bedford. There are also four year-round walks that can be done as well.
Walkers will register at the Lawrence County Museum, 929 15th St., from 9 a.m. until noon. Walkers are asked to be finished by 3 p.m. Both 5K and 10K walks are available. There is parking behind the museum, near the corner of 14th and J streets. Registration will be in the meeting room and walkers may use the rear entrance of the building.
Those who register will be shuttled to Coxton Road and walk back along the former railroad right-of-way. A stroll through town leading back to the starting point will complete the 10K walk.
The first half of the walk is along an easy level trail of packed fine gravel with amazing views of the rural countryside. Visitors will cross the Salt Creek Bridge and walk above the bank of the White River. Much of the route is along rock cuts, through an old quarry, and along limestone bluffs. Scenic forest and bottom land streams follow the old rail bed as it makes it way from the White River into Bedford. Walkers will cross several bridges and past limestone benches with mile markers every half mile along the trail.
As the volkswalk route leaves the railway bed, hikers will pass a waterfall and walk through Wilson Park, and through historic Bedford. For those who are not looking for credit from the Volkswalk Association, the walk is free. Volkswalks are for all ages and are an excellent way to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
A second volkswalk will be April 23 in Brown County. Walkers will start at the Brown County YMCA in Nashville and pass by several historic landmarks.
There are two year-round volkswalks in Lawrence County and two more in Monroe County for those who would like to make a weekend of it. Bedford Hiking Club hosts two year-rounds, one starting at Hardee's (16th and O streets) in Bedford; and the other within the boundaries of Spring Mill State Park, starting at Spring Mill Inn. The two Monroe County volkswalks begin at the Paynetown Recreation Area office on Lake Monroe and the other at the Bloomington Courtyard by Marriott, 310 S. College Ave.
