(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Men’s Warming Center has closed for the season.
According to officials, of the 89 nights the center was open, men stayed at the shelter 85 of those nights.
The warming center, which operated out of Harps Commons this year, was opened January 2 and closed March 31. It open daily at 5 p.m. and closed the following day at 8 a.m. Men received a hot meal, breakfast and a sack lunch for the day. Thanks to nearly $10,000 in donations from St. Vincent Church, GM Bedford Casting, Lawrence County Community Foundation and St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Greg Stanley, volunteer coordinator told the Times-Mail that there were 19 men who stayed at the shelter this season, some returning for more than one night. The highest single-night occupancy was seven.
Father Rick Eldred of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church says the shelter needs to find a new location for next season. A group will meet in a few weeks to critique its efforts and plan for next year.
