(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University police will increase their presence during a lecture from controversial political scientist and author Charles Murray.
Many have described Murray as a white supremacist. Murray was invited to IU before violent protests at Middlebury College in Vermont shut down his speech there in March.
The restrictions are the result of opposition to Murray's lecture. More than 50 IU students, faculty and staff added their names to an open letter against Murray's visit. IU english Grad Solidarity Coalition has planned a peaceful protest prior to the lecture outside Franklin Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m. They do not plan to disrupt the lecture, but want to hold the university accountable for giving Murray a platform
From 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, all doors to IU's Franklin Hall will be locked and IU Police will be stationed at all entryways.
In addition to those who have tickets to the event, only IU students, faculty and staff who have regularly scheduled business in the building will be allowed to enter.
Students attending class in Franklin Hall during the hours of restricted entry must use the southeast doors and show their IU identification to university police, who will check their names with a list provided by IU's Media School, which operates out of Franklin Hall.
