(LOOGOOTTEE) - A Loogootee woman charged with causing the death of her mother will appear in court on May 6th.
Police say that 39-year-old Heather Dawn Christmas, also known as Heather Carrico, is facing two counts of causing death when operating a motor vehicle with an alcohol content of 0.15 percent or more, and operating a motor vehicle causing death with a Schedule I or Schedule II controlled substance.
Carrico was in court on Tuesday requesting a court appointed attorney. According to court records, Michael Fritch's law office will represent her.
According to a Daviess County Sheriff's Department report, on February 16 officers received a call around 8:30 p.m. reporting a vehicle was submerged in West Boggs Lake near County Road 1200 East, just south of County Road 500 North, also known as St. Mary's Road.
When police arrived they found one person still inside the 2005 Ford Taurus and immediately entered the water and pulled 62-year-old Joyce D. Christmas of Loogootee out of the vehicle.
She was taken to Daviess Community Hospital where she pronounced dead. Joyce was an employee of Buehler's Buy-Low grocery deli in Loogootee.
Police say the Ford Taurus was traveling north on CR 1200E when, for an unknown reason, the car left the roadway, striking multiple cable barriers before going down an embankment and into West Boggs Lake.
