(BEDFORD) - Final preparations are underway for the 25th annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive on Saturday.
As letter carriers are keenly aware, too many of our customers live in challenging situations, uncertain of where their next meal will come.
Postal customers can leave donations of nonperishable food beside their mailboxes to be picked up by letter carriers and volunteers during the course of the delivery day. All food collected goes to local food pantries.
Food donated in Mitchell will go to the Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor's food pantry in Mitchell. Heltonville post office will donate its food to a Heltonville pantry, and the remainder of the food collected in Lawrence County will be distributed as equitably as possible among three local pantries - Community Care, LIFE's Bedford pantry and God's Place.
Becky's Place, a local women's shelter, will receive any food collected on Monday, May 15th.
Food collected in Orleans and Paoli will be given to pantries there, and the French Lick post office will accept donations at the retail window.
Three local schools are collecting food to assist with the project: Parkview Primary, Shawswick Elementary, Springville Elementary.
The food drive started in October 1991 as a pilot program in 10 communities across the country. After receiving input from food banks and pantries, organizers decided to reschedule the project for late spring since large donations usually came in during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
