(BEDFORD) - Five people were injured in a three-vehicle accident on State Road 58 East on Wednesday afternoon.
Bedford Police, Bedford Fire Department extrication unit and an IU Health Hospital ambulance crew responded to the scene at 4:36 p.m.
According to a Bedford Police report, 61-year-old Edward Couch of Bedford told police he had driven his 2003 Buick Century across the center line colliding with a 2013 Toyota Venza driven by 77-year-old Marcia Wray of Nashville.
Wray told police she was traveling east on State Road 58 when Couch's car crossed the center line and collided with her vehicle head-on. Then Wray's vehicle was hit in the rear by a 2016 Nissan Versa driven by 26-year-old Deanna Strughiss of Terre Haute.
Strughiss told police she did not have time to stop or steer her vehicle to avoid colliding into Wray's car.
As soon as the accident happened, Strughiss says she got out of her car to check on a female juvenile passenger in the back seat and didn't put the vehicle in park, which caused it to roll off the north side of the highway.
Couch complained of chest pain and was taken by IU Health Bedford Hospital for treatment and submitted to a blood-alcohol test. He was then transferred to another hospital.
Wray also complained of chest pain and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital. A passenger in Wray's vehicle, 79-year-old Phyllis Gray, complained of chest pain and was taken to IU Health Bedford Hospital and later transferred to another hospital.
Strughiss and her passenger, 32-year-old Kelly Godsey of Terre Haute, both complained of neck pain and were taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital where they were treated and released.
