(BEDFORD) - A Heltonville man was arrested Tuesday evening after police say he broke into a vehicle and injured the owner as well as an off-duty police officer.
Bedford Police arrested 20-year-old Michael Guess on charges of unauthorized entry to a vehicle, theft and two counts of battery resulting in bodily injury.
According to a Lawrence County Superior Court I probable cause affidavit, on May 2 at 2:22 a.m., Bedford Police Department officers were called to the 1900 block of I Street after a report stating they had caught a man inside of their vehicle and detained him.
When police arrived they found an off-duty Oolitic Police officer and another man who had Guess detained.
The owner of the vehicle told police he had stepped outside and noticed a light on in his car. When he walked closer he saw someone inside his vehicle.
The man opened the vehicle door, and that is when Guess allegedly told the man he had a gun and would kill him.
The vehicle owner grabbed Guess and that is when Guess slammed his head into the owner's face. Guess then punched the man in the face several times.
The owner of the vehicle was able to hold down Guess and screamed for someone to call police.
Off-duty Oolitic officer Toby Gerkin, who lives nearby, heard the screaming, grabbed his weapon and cell phone and went outside to find his neighbor had Guess pinned to the ground.
Gerkins says Guess kicked him in the right side of the face so hard he saw stars.
Guess is being held without bond in the Lawrence County jail because he was on probation at the time of this arrest after being convicted of synthetic identity deception and resisting law enforcement from an August 2016 incident.
