(BLOOMFIELD) - Representatives Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC has confirmed the FBI is conducting a separate investigation into the Bloomfield-based corporation.
In a press release, The Board voted to retain an independent accounting firm to perform an internal control audit of UDWI's financial records. At this time, there is not a time table in which the audit will be completed.
"The process to do so has begun," the press release states. ""In addition, authorities from the Federal Bureau of Investigation now are conducting a separate investigation; UDWI's Board and leadership are cooperating fully in assisting with their review. Our Board recognizes the significant nature of these actions and has considered all implications of such actions. We will fully support the findings of these investigations and will determine next steps when appropriate."
The board of directors placed CEO Brian Sparks on a paid administrative leave pending the results of an internal audit. Sparks has served as the cooperative's CEO for 10 years.
Manager of HR and Compliance Mike Chapman and Manager of Operations and Engineering Shane Smith have assumed interim responsibilities during the audit.
Both say the audit and FBI investigation are not related.
"Our Board recognizes the significant nature of these actions and has considered all implications of such actions. We will fully support the findings of the independent audit process and will determine next steps when the audit process has concluded," the statement reads.
