Local Students Receive First-Ever Educator Scholarship

(STATEHOUSE) - Local students planning to pursue a career in education are among the recipients of this year’s Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship, according to State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford).
"The purpose of this scholarship program is to encourage and inspire Hoosier scholars to become Hoosier teachers," May said. "Exceptional educators help put their students in a better position to succeed. Assisting Indiana's best and brightest with their college education will benefit future students throughout the state."
According to May, the Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship pays $7,500 per year for up to four years to students who obtain their teaching license and commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years. The scholarship is available to 200 high-achieving high school and college students each year who either graduate in the top 20 percent of their class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT.
Over 600 students applied, and 200 scholarships were awarded to highly qualified students across the state, including these recipients from Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence and Monroe counties:
Lawrence County
- Madison Ryan, Bedford North Lawrence High School, Indiana State University
Monroe County
- Garrett Crowe, Franklin County High, Indiana University Bloomington
- Megan Grabowski, Bloomington High School South, Indiana University Bloomington
- Elena Herrera, Bloomington High School North, Indiana University Bloomington
- Jacquelyn Parkes, Bloomington High School North, Indiana University Bloomington
- Elizabeth VanAllen, Edgewood High School, University of Indianapolis
Jackson County
- Brittany Isaacs, Brownstown Central High School, University of Indianapolis
- Victoria Mahoney, Seymour Senior High School, Indiana State University
Johnson County
- Ella Garrison, Greenwood Community High School, Indiana University Bloomington
- McKenzie McCoy, Whiteland Community High School, Purdue University West Lafayette
- Kara Nussbaum, Center Grove High School, Indiana Wesleyan University
- Brooke Powers, Whiteland Community High School, University of Indianapolis
- Emily Segrest, Franklin Community High School, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
- Emma Wolf, Center Grove High School, University of Indianapolis
"The Commission wants to congratulate all 200 of the students who were chosen to receive the Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship," Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers said. "We were encouraged by the high-quality applicants and know these future teachers will have a positive impact in Indiana classroom."
