(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell man was injured after he lost control of his motorcycle Saturday night at the intersection of Meridian and South Meridian roads.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, 51-year-old Charles Slaughter of Mitchell complained of back pain and head pain.
Police say that when they arrived at the scene, Slaughter was off the roadway and being treated by medics. His red 2007 Harley Davidson FLH Series motorcycle was on the edge of the railroad bed.
Police say they could smell the odor of alcohol on Slaughter's breath. Slaughter told police he had drank a couple of drinks but "felt confident he was alright to drive."
Slaughter told police he was attempting to beat a rain storm and was traveling at a "rapid pace" when he suddenly realized he ran out of roadway.
Slaughter told police that he knew "all he could do was hold on until it came to a stop."
Police say Slaughter was traveling south on Meridian Road but continued straight at the left curve as the hill crest, north of the intersection of Meridian and South Meridian roads.
The motorcycle traveled about 20 feet in the grass and then up an embankment at the railroad bed where it stopped approximately 6 feet from the railroad tracks.
Witnesses told police they saw Slaughter traveling at a high-rate of speed just before the crash.
