(BEDFORD) - A Duke Energy Grant of $15,900 will help more than 40 North Lawrence Community Schools students improve their reading skills.
The funding provides a three-week Power Reader and Writer summer program for first- and second-grade students at Parkview Primary.
Through this grant, students will receive additional individualized instruction and attention under the direction of a teacher and a teacher's assistant for four weeks. At the end of the program, students will receive a book bag full of books to take home to read throughout the rest of the summer.
The grant will provide transportation, and students also will be able to take advantage of the free breakfast and lunch program provided through the NLCS Food Services Department.
Participating students are identified through various assessments to qualify for the program.
This is the third year North Lawrence Community Schools has been awarded the grant.
