(BLOOMINGTON) - An accident Saturday on State Road 37 claimed the life of a Martinsville child and injured two others.
The crash was reported at 6:30 p.m. at State Road 37 and Bottom Road, four miles north of Bloomington.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil, a cyclist attempted to cross SR37 at Bottom Road and the individual and the bicycle fell over into the left lane on the southbound side.
A southbound Chevrolet four-door passenger car driven by 21-year-old Alexis P. Davis of Greenwood was approaching the intersection. Davis successfully avoided the cyclist by quickly swerving to the right.
Tragically this evasive maneuver caused the female driver to lose control and slide sideways through the median and into the northbound lanes of SR 37.
A northbound 2013 Chevrolet truck driven by 50-year-old John P. Wobser of Franklin was then unable to avoid a collision with Davis' car.
The collision resulted in the death of 11-year-old Kaitlyn Wells of Martinsville.
Both Lanes of SR 37 were shut down while an accident reconstruction team investigated the incident.
This crash remains under investigation.
The Indiana State Police wish to express its condolences to Kaitlyn Wells' family in the aftermath of this tragedy.
