(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network has issued a challenge to Bloomington and Monroe County high school students to make this summer a “Summer of Service” (SOS).
This new initiative challenges area high schoolers to log a collective total of 1000 hours over the ten weeks of summer, from May 30 to August 8.
Teens wishing to participate should add their names to the SOS roster at BloomingtonVolunteerNetwork.org/SummerOfService and then use the website to search, browse, and connect to opportunities open to high schoolers. Teens must log their hours on the website in order for them to count towards the total. All community service hours logged by teens will go toward the 1000 hour challenge. Those who log 20 or more hours will receive a personalized certificate of achievement and a note of congratulations from Mayor John Hamilton and the Bloomington Volunteer Network.
Summer of Service was developed with assistance from members of the Monroe County Youth Council. One member, Caroline Cherry, said "The Bloomington Volunteer Network's Summer of Service will give commendation to the many hard-working teen volunteers in our city, as well as inspire even more high school students to get involved. While uniting under a common goal I believe we, as Bloomington's teens, can make a meaningful impact on the city we call home."
All teens currently in high school or preparing to enter high school in the fall of 2017 are eligible to participate. In addition to assisting an established nonprofit organization, such as Community Kitchen or Habitat for Humanity, service may be informal, such as assisting with chores for an elderly neighbor. The hours must be verified to be included and must be performed in Monroe County. Restricted activities include lobbying, compensated service, serving family, and proselytizing of personal beliefs and/or related church-affiliated activities.
