(BEDFORD) - Becky Skillman, Chair of the Board for Radius Indiana, started the event by saying, “The goal is to provide a day of inspiration…to get people wanting to learn more, do more and become more.”
And the Fifth Annual Becky Skillman Leadership Institute speakers did inspire.
There were five guest speakers at the institute including Major General Courtney P. Carr, Kurt Godleveske, Butler Basketball Coach, Tom Allen, IU Head Football Coach, Clayton Anderson, Country Music Artist, and the Second Lady of the United States, Mrs. Karen Pence.
Mrs. Pence left the Becky Skillman Institute with three points of advice to all leaders. She said to look for opportunities to affect life, own the responsibilities of leaders to give back, and own the role as leader.
The Second Lady went on to describe each point in more detail.
She said, "Leadership, I believe is a privilege...look for opportunities to affect someone's life. When I stepped into the role as First Lady of Indiana, organizations all over the state wanted me to be their spokes person, wanting me to join their cause."
In order to stand with many causes, Mrs. Pence created the Indiana First Lady's Charitable Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 in order to help all the organizations that came to her for support--affecting many lives.
Mrs. Pence then described how leaders should give back to their communities and finished with her final point-- leaders should accept their role, take on leadership and embrace it.
She concluded saying that leadership is like a pebble rippling into a pond, "Your impact as leaders is going to be felt far and wide."
Skillman said that each year the Becky Skillman Leadership Institute strives every year for great speakers and that this year would be hard to beat.
