(CLAY CO.) - A 15-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a vehicle while running into the road to retrieve a ball on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on State Road 246 west of SR 159 in Clay County just after 12:30 p.m.
According to an Indiana State Police report, Layla Raines of Jasonville suffered traumatic injuries as a result of being struck by a 2009 Nissan Quest van driven by 39-year-old Stephen D. Agee, also of Jasonville, on State Road 246.
Raines, a student at Shakamak Junior-Senior High School, was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital, where she later died.
The accident remains under investigation and at this time no charges have been filed.
On Wednesday, at 7 p.m a vigil was held for Raines at Shakamak High School's gymnasium.
A friend, Adam Slater, says that "she was so nice and she could brighten up anyone's day."
