(DUBOIS CO.) - Dubois County Sheriff’s Department Detective Sergeant Tom J. Kleinhelter will run for Sheriff of Dubois County in the 2018 election.
Current Sheriff Donny Lampert has completed two consecutive four-year terms in office and cannot be re-elected in 2018.
"As the current detective sergeant in the Dubois County Sheriff's Department, I am excited about the opportunity to run for the office of Sheriff of Dubois County in 2018," Kleinhelter said.
Kleinhelter started with the sheriff's department in 1994 as a jail officer and advanced through the department holding every position that is available through testing and interviews. He has been the detective sergeant for the five years and is the lead investigator regarding most of the crimes against persons. He also supervises the evidence room as well as the narcotics officer.
"I believe the Sheriff's Department is the premier law enforcement agency in the county," he said. "I will use the tremendous amount of knowledge within our department to continuously improve, which will allow us to serve our citizens more efficiently and be more of a proactive agency."
Kleinhelter said that opioids are a big concern for him.
"It is no secret that we have an opioid problem in our county, and I will work with all of our state and county offices to find a solution to help reduce the number of individuals returning to jail as repeat offenders," he said.
Kleinhelter has been an active member of numerous boards and organizations throughout his career, including the drug court, the Community Correction Advisory Board and the Child Advocacy Center. He is a certified Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Training Officer.
He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a licensed official for the Indiana High School Athletic Association for Baseball and Basketball.
"With the support of my wife Angie of 25 years and our two adult children Taylor and Reece, I feel now is the perfect time to seek this office, as I have the time necessary to successfully fulfill the duties of sheriff," he said. "I am an excellent listener, and I do not rush to judgment. I have the broad experience, leadership, and organizational skills needed to be an outstanding choice for the citizens of Dubois County to serve as your next sheriff."
