(BLOOMINGTON) - A bat has tested positive for rabies in Monroe County.
According to the Monroe County Health Department this is the first time in four years an animal has tested positive for rabies in the county.
Animal Care and Control removed the bat from an apartment close to the downtown area near the Indiana University campus last week.
Any captured bat with potential contact with a pet or human is sent to the Indiana State Department of Health for rabies testing, where the animal is also killed. The apartment tenant was unsure if they had been bitten by the bat.
The health department report between 30 and 39 animals from Monroe County are submitted to the state for rabies testing each year due to potential exposure concerns. Animals considered to be at highest risk of transmitting rabies to humans in Indiana include bats, skunks, foxes, raccoons and coyotes.
