(SALEM) - A Salem man was killed and his wife injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Road 56, east of Salem on Tuesday afternoon.
According to an Indiana State Police report, the accident happened just before 2:30 p.m. on State Road 56 near Heritage Chapel Road.
Troopers say 76-year-old Sam Deaton died at the scene. His wife 71-year-old Malvina Deaton, who was a passenger, suffered non-life threatening injures and was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Salem Hospital for treatment. The second driver 56-year-old Patricia Burdine of Salem also suffered non-life threatening injures and was also transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Salem Hospital.
Trooper Brett Walters says Deaton and his wife were traveling west on State Road 56 in a 1988 Chevrolet pick-up and were approaching Heritage Chapel Road when a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier traveling east on State Road 56 and driven by Burdine crossed the center line and crashed into the pickup. The impact caused the pickup to flip upside down and stop on the west side of the roadway.
The Chevrolet Cavalier continued for approximately 100 feet after impact coming to rest on the east side of the roadway.
All occupants of the vehicles were wearing seat belts. An ISP crash reconstructionist was called to the scene.
