(JACKSON CO.) - The Jackson County Sertoma Club recognized a Seymour resident for her bravery and courage in helping to rescue a family from a burning home in the 700 North block of Walnut Street in Seymour on May 27th.
WSLM News reports, Sertoma presented 18-year-old Macie Fletcher of Seymour with the local club's highest honor, The Service To Mankind Award.
Scott Davis, Jackson County Reserve Deputy and Sertoma club secretary, heard of Macie's actions through the Sheriff's department who received the initial 911 call. Davis nominated Macie for the award.
On May 27th, Macie, who lives near the house that was on fire, knew that there were small children living in the house and asked if everyone had gotten out of the home safely. When she realized that no one knew if anyone was home, Macie ran to the house and started beating on the front door and even broke out a front window trying to alert the family.
The south side of the house was on fire and Macie could see the owner of the house trying to gather the children to get them out but the family went to the door on the side of the house where the fire was burning. Macie then ran to that door to help get the family out of the house.
During the panic of the fire, the homeowner was having difficulty unlocking the door where they were trying to exit. With the fire still growing, especially above the door that the family was trying to leave from, Macie broken open the door, picked up one of the children who she passed off to another person at the fire scene, and then went into the house a second time to help with another child who she carried away from the burning house. Due to Macie's actions no one died or were injured in the fire.
Officer Davis presented Macie with the award in a surprise ceremony at her church, the Seymour Apostolic Tabernacle during their Sunday worship service. Macie is a 2017 graduate of Seymour High School. She will be attending IUPUI this fall.
