Green Hill Cemetery Grounds Need Help

(BEDFORD) - The Green Hill Cemetery Association is asking for the help as typical business model for cemetery grounds isn’t self sustaining anymore for the Green Hill Cemetery and can no longer pay for someone to maintain the grounds.

That is why the cemetery is not in its usual pristine condition and a permanent solution is needed.

The cemetery is financed through the sale of burial plots, a perpetual care fund, rent from the existing home, and a stipend from the city in exchange for maintaining the old city section according to a Green Hill Cemetery Association Board Member.

"At this time the Green Hill Cemetery Association, we are totally not for profit. We are not city owned. We have survived all these years by lot sales and donations. And we recently had a large acreage for sale that fell through. So that put us in a money crunch," said Diana Key, a member of the Green Hill Cemetery Board.

The nonprofit used to pay to keep the grounds maintained by Mike and Martha Scott. Key said they always did "wonderful work."

Now that funds are low, the cemetery can no longer pay the couple to maintain the grounds.

To help the Green Hill Cemetery, you can donate to the cause or pre-purchase your plot. Key assured that there are many plots still available in the 30 acre cemetery.

Those wanting to help can also donate their time. Key mentioned the idea of a "Day of Caring" for the cemetery where those willing to help clean up the grounds would come and do so.

"For example if someone can trim trees we can put them on some projects, or general labor. They could clean stones or sweep the grass off of stones. We just want to reach out to all of those persons to create a data base of information that we may work from to establish such a Day of Caring for the cemetery," said Key.
