(MITCHELL) - A Paoli man was killed Friday night in an accident on VFW Road.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, 54-year-old Willard D. Sneed was ejected from his 2008 Chevrolet HHR and died at the scene from closed chest injuries.
Police say Sneed was traveling south near the 1100 block of VFW Road, south of Meridian Road when his car ran off the west side of the road and traveled 104 feet parallel with the roadway. The car came back onto the roadway and traveled southeast crossing the center line running off the east side of the roadway, traveled 45 feet striking a tree on the driver's side removing the front driver's side tire and rim. There was also heavy damage to the vehicle. The vehicle rolled two times, skidding south 70 feet. Then went off the roadway and skidded another 75 feet southwest. The vehicle then went off the west side of the road where Sneed was ejected from the vehicle, he was not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle then traveled another 36 feet stopping against a fence in the upright position.
Police say the driver side air bags did not deploy on the recently purchased vehicle.
Assisting at the scene were Mitchell Police officers, Marion Township Rural Fire Department first responders and AMR/St. Vincent Dunn Hospital ambulance personnel.
