(UNDATED) - They can be found in city parks, along the sidewalks, discarded in parking lots and yards. Residents are calling police every day about used syringes.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin says they are being found everywhere and the likelihood of one of your family members coming across a dangerous needle increases by the day.
And people trying to do the right thing by disposing of the used syringes are getting hurt.
Residents are asked to call police when they find a discarded syringe.
Goodin says police have ways to pick them up safely and dispose of them in proper containers.
"If you are going to pick it up wear puncture-proof gloves and use a pair of pliers, anything that you can use to pick the needle up safely," Goodin added. "It then needs to be discarded in a plastic or glass bottle."
Parents are asked to educate their children about discarded needles - they need to understand the dangers.
