(BEDFORD) - Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department firefighters battled a barn fire on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at the home of Phil Hawkins at 3130 Erie Church Road at 4:20 p.m. Firefighters were told there were animals trapped inside.
Shawswick VFD responded with four trucks and 8 firefighters.
"The barn had smoke and fire showing when we arrived," says Firefighter Bob Brown. "The animals were all out of the barn."
Brown says Marshall VFD firefighter Chad Hayes was nearby and saw the flames and smoke and rushed to the scene to help save the animals.
"There were chickens and a donkey inside the barn," Brown says. "He was able to get them out before we arrived on the scene."
Brown says the 20-foot by 20-foot barn was destroyed.
"The owner was able to lend a hand and used a bulldozer to push the barn down allowing us to hit some remaining hot spots," Brown added.
One firefighter did get over heated battling the blaze. She was treated at the scene by AMR ambulance personnel.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
