(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested on attempted murder charges after he allegedly stabbed his father-in-law during a domestic fight on Monday.
Bloomington Police arrested 19-year-old Evan McArdle on charges of attempted murder, criminal confinement, intimidation and domestic battery.
Officers were called to an apartment in the 2300 block of South Winslow Court at 11:06 a.m. Saturday after a report of a domestic fight in the parking lot and two men with stab wounds.
A 24-year-old woman told police she called her parents for help after McArdle allegedly slammed her head into a wall and was preventing her from leaving their apartment. She told police her husband put her in a chokehold and then threatened her with his pocket knife in front of her 48-year-old father who arrived to help.
The woman's father, who was armed with a wrench, struck McArdle to protect his daughter, Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams says.
During the altercation the father-in-law suffered four stab wounds to upper body. Both men fell to the floor and McArdle began kicking his father-in-law in the head. The woman, in an attempt to save her father, picked up the pocket knife, that was discarded during the altercation, and stabbed her husband three times in his right shoulder.
Police say both the woman and father-in-law were victims and acted in self-defense.
Both men were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The 48-year-old father is in stable condition at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. McArdle was treated for his injuries and released. He was then transported to the Monroe County Jail.
