Caver Locked In Cave, Rescued Tuesday

Last updated on Monday, September 25, 2017

(SULLIVAN) - A 19-year-old man says he feels lucky to be alive after spending 60 hours locked alone inside a gated cave.

Indiana University freshman Lukas Cavar was on a spelunking trip to Sullivan Cave outside Bloomington on Sept. 17th when he became separated from 12 other members of the university's Caving Club.

When he reached the cave entrance, Cavar found fellow club members had padlocked its gate, unaware he remained inside.

Cavar said he couldn't get a cell phone signal, so he screamed for hours. He didn't have much food or any water, so he licked moisture from the cave walls to stay hydrated.

Cavar said he spent most of his time in the cave talking to himself, napping, and foraging for water.

His parents texted him on Monday. When he never responded, they knew something was wrong, and they filed a missing person report. When members of the caving club found out he was missing, they went back to the cave and rescued him late Tuesday.
