Indiana Department of Education Releases Spring 2017 ISTEP+ Results

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Education released the 2017 ISTEP+ results.

Performance remained stable across content areas in grades 3-8, while for Grade 10 performance rose slightly. About 50 percent of Indiana students in grades 3-8 failed the math and reading portion. That number is steady compared to last year.

ISTEP+ assesses more rigorous Indiana Academic Standards adopted in 2014 for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Altogether, ISTEP+ assesses English Language Arts, Mathematics in grades 3-8 and 10, Science in grades 4, 6 and 10, and Social Studies in grades 5 and 7. Current proficiency levels were established based on feedback from educators following the 2015 and 2016 test administrations.

Statewide 51.5 percent of third through eighth graders passed the math and reading portion compared to 51.6 percent last year. The 10th graders showed a little improvement. 34.4 percent of them passed math and reading compared to 32.2 percent last year.

This school year is the last year for ISTEP. In the 2018-2019 school year students will start taking ILEARN.

Totals for School Corporations For Grades 3-8

North Lawrence: English Language Arts percent passing was 62.2, in Mathematics 51.7 and in both 45.5 percent.
Mitchell: English Language Arts percent passing was 58.0, in Mathematics 51.0 and in both 42.3 percent.
Orleans: English Language Arts percent passing was 62.2, in Mathematics 58.9 and in both 47.0 percent.
Medora: English Language Arts percent passing was 34.8, in Mathematics 43.5 and in both 25 percent.
Paoli: English Language Arts percent passing was 61.3, in Mathematics 51.7 and in both 44.1 percent.
Shoals: English Language Arts percent passing was 54.9, in Mathematics 61.2 and in both 46.5 percent.
Salem: English Language Arts percent passing was 57.8, in Mathematics 50.6 and in both 42.2 percent.
Loogootee: English Language Arts percent passing was 68.1, in Mathematics 70.8 and in both 60.3 percent.
Brownstown: English Language Arts percent passing was 61.7, in Mathematics 57.2 and in both 49.5 percent.
Bloomfield: English Language Arts percent passing was 68.6, in Mathematics 61.9 and in both 54.5 percent.

Indiana continues with ISTEP+ 3-8 and 10 during the 2017-18 school year as the Department works towards the transition to ILEARN in 2018-19. ILEARN assesses the same Indiana Academic Standards as ISTEP+, but leverages computer adaptive testing to better inform educators about students' strengths and weaknesses.

Recruitment of educators to contribute to the development of the ILEARN assessment begins in September.
