(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County commissioners gave their approval Tuesday morning for the construction of a new pedestrian crossing at Bedford North Lawrence High School on Stars Boulevard.
The request came from Sheriff Mike Branham, Bedford North Lawrence Principal Todd Tanksley and North Lawrence Community Schools Maintenance Director Steve Ritter members of the school safety commission.
"We have been talking about this for several years," says Sheriff Mike Branham. "The decision to make a crossing comes from concerns that a pedestrian will be hit by oncoming traffic."
The school corporation will pay for fencing and stripping on the roadway. The county will provide signage for the area.
Currently spectators and participants for the cross county and soccer teams are parking on the west side of the roadway and then crossing the roadway to attend events.
"But they are crossing at many different areas," says Sheriff Branham. "A fence will be placed on the west side of the roadway to funnel the pedestrian traffic to the cross walk."
"It has been one of those thing were officials have been waiting for something to happen," Principal Tanksley added.
