(BEDFORD) - A woman was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital after the dump truck she was driving overturned on State Road 54 West on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a Lawrence County Police report the accident happened at 1:35 p.m. on State Road 54 about 3,000 feet east of Phillips Lane.
Police say that 58-year-old Sandra Harper of Poland was trapped inside the dump truck and was freed from the wreckage by Bedford Fire Department firefighters. Poland was responsive but could not tell police how the accident happened. After being freed, she was transported by ambulance to the parking lot at Springville Elementary School where she was picked up by a medical helicopter and transported to Methodist Hospital.
Police say, Poland was traveling west on State Road 54 with a truck load of gravel and for an unknow reason left the roadway. Police say Poland then over-corrected, causing the 2005 Mack CV Series dump truck to leave the highway and over turn.
Assisting at the scene were first responders from Marshall and Perry Township Volunteer Fire Departments and Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Inspectors.
