Daviess Co. Deputy Troy Fuhs Announces Candidacy For Sheriff

In my role as Sheriff, I will help lead Daviess County forward and be a positive role model for all. In addition to overseeing the Security Center (jail) and working with the court system, one of the primary roles as Sheriff will be as an advocate for the people of Daviess County. There will be many challenges for our community over the next years, and I am ready to meet those challenges.

First and foremost, as a former small business owner for almost 10 years, a deputy sheriff for 11 years, a volunteer fireman for 16 years, and a medical first responder for 13 years, I have the training, experience and knowledge, energy, and ideas to tackle present issues we are facing as well as challenges we will face in the future.

Second, I will focus on the drug challenge in our county by implementing a specialized drug unit that focuses on getting drugs,drug money, and illegal guns off the streets.

Furthermore, we will have an open door policy in dealing with the addiction problems many in our county face. The open door policy will foster a dialogue around the unique opportunity for the Sheriff's office and local law enforcement agencies to take direct action against the disease of drug addiction in our community.

Opiate addiction is a problem for all of society. Many people turn to addictive drugs such as heroin after their prescription medication runs out. Because these drugs are so addictive, people are dying at an alarming rate from overdose. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the number of deaths from prescription drugs has almost tripled in the past 15 years. In addition, the number of deaths from heroin has increased six fold during the same time period.

Third, I will focus on our young people by implementing programs related to drug safety, drug awareness, bullying, peer pressure, making good decisions and choices, and being a leader for our young people. For the past nine years, I have volunteered as a counselor at a youth leadership camp that is sponsored by the Indiana Sheriffs' Association. It is very fulfilling and rewarding to help lay a good foundation for young kids. I see the young people of this world as arrows and we are the archers. It is our responsibility to shoot them in the right direction.

Last, as a fiscal conservative I will maximize the Sheriff's office services to our community through the efficient and effective use of funding sources of local tax dollars and other available funding opportunities. Targeting efficiencies throughout the Sheriff's office, I will maximize safety enhancements for all Daviess County citizens, while simultaneously getting the most out of every dollar spent by the department. Sustaining a superior level of employee performance can only be gained through all department employees being supplied with essential equipment and mandatory training, enabling all personnel to better serve the public interest. I will look to expand and enhance services provided to Daviess County residents, while at the same time looking for all opportunities to increase efficiencies. Department employees must be prepared and empowered to provide a superior level of productivity to all citizens of Daviess County.

I have demonstrated the ability to bring people together toward common goals and unity. I look forward to a positive campaign, working with our fellow citizens, and tackling the tough challenges.
