(SPRINGVILLE) - Firefighters from four volunteer fire departments battled a house fire Tuesday night in the 1660 block of Sieboldt Quarry Road.
Firefighters from Marshall, Perry, Oolitic and Indian Creek arrived on the scene at 11:27 p.m. with five fire units and 13 firefighters.
"When we arrived there was moderate to heavy smoke showing from all sides of the two-story house," says Marshall Fire Chief Jason Martin. "We believe the fire started in the flue. We have the state fire marshal coming in this morning to assist with the investigation."
The home owned by Frank Murphy and Janet Manley was destroyed. Chief Martin says the structure is still standing but the interior was gutted by the flames.
"It took us about an hour to an hour and a half to get the fire under control," Chief Martin says. "The house had an addition and the roofs didn't line up. The fire was hiding in a lot of small crevices that we had to dig into to extinguish."
The family escaped with their dog and two cats.
"They were able to get out thanks to a working smoke detector," Martin says. "They had went to bed when the detector woke Ms. Manley."
Firefighters were on the scene until just after 4 a.m. this morning.
