(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell woman is behind bars after a stabbing Tuesday morning at 445 Dale Street.
According to Mitchell Police, 42-year-old Matthew Lawson suffered multiple stab wounds and was flown by medical helicopter to IU Health Hospital in Indianapolis. After being treated, he was later released.
Police arrested 31-year-old Brooke Shelton on charges of aggravated battery resulting in serious bodily injury and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Police were called to the home at 2:16 a.m. after a report of a stabbing. When police arrived they found Lawsson bleeding on the front porch with several stab wounds to his abdomen, back and side.
Witnesses told police Shelton had stabbed Lawson.
Police found Shelton at the home. She had suffered a head injury and had blood on her face and clothing.
Police say Shelton had got into an argument outside of the home with a woman who lives at the address.
Lawson heard the argument and tried to intervene by grabbing Shelton who had a knife in her hand.
Reports note that when Lawson grabbed Shelton she repeatedly stabbed him.
Shelton was then injured when Lawson punched her in the face in self defense.
Shelton was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then booked into the Lawrence County Jail where she is being held on a $50,000 surety or $5,005 cash bond.
