(BLOOMINGTON) - A public-private partnership between the City of Bloomington’s Economic and Sustainable Development Department and the Bicycle Garage, Inc. has resulted in a new mural in Peoples Park called “You Belong Here.”
Local artist Eva Allen recently completed this new project, which is located on the west wall of the Bicycle Garage Building. "You Belong Here" welcomes residents and visitors with iconic images that showcase Bloomington's past, present, and future.
"We are dedicated to facilitating public-private partnerships in Bloomington that lead to a greater shared sense of identity and public access to art, as well as opportunities for our brilliant local artists. 'You Belong Here' is a special commission that is important to Bloomington's identity as we head into our Bicentennial. Peoples Park, like Bloomington, is for everyone, and we hope the mural helps everyone feel welcome," said Mayor John Hamilton.
This mural is part of a larger effort put forth by the City of Bloomington Arts Commission (BAC) and its Public Art Master Plan for the City of Bloomington. The Plan has identified shared civic values for the arts, objectives and aspirations for public art, and priorities for public art investment, which are designed to positively impact the creation of bold, innovative and impactful works of public art in performance, visual, literary, design and architecture disciplines.
"It's been wonderful seeing so many residents, students, and community members taking selfies and creating a new destination mural in one of our iconic urban parks," said Sean Starowitz, Assistant Director of Economic Development for the Arts.
Join the City of Bloomington, the Bicycle Garage, Inc. and Eva Allen at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 19, at 3:00 p.m. at the mural site, 501 E Kirkwood Avenue.
